Next November 17, at 15:00, in the seminar room of the Rectory of the University of Algarve, the national presentation of the International Centre on Ageing (CENIE) will be held. This project is the result of a consortium that, in addition to the University of Algarve, is composed of the General Directorate of Health, the General Foundation of the University of Salamanca, and the General Foundation of the Higher Council for Scientific Research.
This project is born from the recognition of the fact that, currently, society is in a global process of ageing due to a progressive increase in the average life expectancy and the reduction of birth rates, causing an alteration of the demographic pyramids with important social and economic repercussions.
The main mission of CENIE is to consolidate itself as a centre of international excellence in regards to research and innovation in the ageing field, through the leadership of the Spain-Portugal cross-border collaboration in the promotion of knowledge and research in the field.
The CENIE will work in the different venues of its Spanish and Portuguese partners. The Portuguese coordination is carried out by Sandra Pais, teacher and researcher at the University of Algarve.
The CENIE project is part of the "COOPERATION PROGRAMME INTERREG VA SPAIN-PORTUGAL (POCTEP)2014-2020" and has as its main objectives to raise awareness in society and generate a change in attitude that promotes ageing as a source of opportunities and not as a threat. The consortium aims to promote research, innovation, and development in order to face the phenomenon of the ageing of the population as an opportunity for economic and social development, encouraging the creation of new researchers and new professional profiles specialized in the field of ageing.
The CENIE also aims to test and implement care models that transform cross-border communities into territories committed to the phenomenon of ageing, friends of the elderly and qualified to meet the needs of elderly people in each territory, whether they are residents or national or foreign tourists.
