When will the winners be announced? 

The winners of each category and the CENIE Grand Prize winner will be announced in the last quarter of 2024.

What about the finalists? 

The 60 finalists will be announced on our website in the last quarter of 2024. 

What are the prizes? 

CENIE Grand Prize winner: €5.000

For each category: 1.250€.

Who selects the winners? 

The Fundación General de la Universidad de Salamanca will select 10 finalists per category, one winner for each category and one CENIE Grand Prize winner from among the 60 finalists. 

Will I be notified if I was NOT selected as a finalist or winner? 

No. Due to the large number of submissions, only the 60 finalists will be notified of their status in the last quarter of 2024. If you don't hear from the General Foundation of the University of Salamanca by then, you are neither a finalist nor a winner. 

With how many photos can I participate in the contest? 

You can enter up to 5 photos in each category for a total of 30 photos submitted to the contest. 

I share an email address with someone else. Can we both enter under the same email address? 

We accept a contestant via email. You can easily get a free email address from a number of sites, including gmail.com, yahoo.com, and hotmail.com.

How do I submit my photo? 

You can submit your photo, or a high quality scan of your photo, on this site by registering as a user and using the form enabled for that purpose.
 We do not accept photographs sent by mail. 

What category should I select for my photo? 

Use your best criteria, but here are the guidelines we suggest you follow when selecting the category: 

People: Portraits and photos of people that emphasise the importance and positivity of generational diversity and their interrelation.

Looks. Photographic images of events, objects or activities showing the value of the new long-lived societies, in which five and six generations coexist in the same temporal space.

Iberian looks. Photographic images of events, objects or activities showing the value of the new long-lived societies, in which five and six generations live together in the same temporal space, and which are located in Spain and Portugal.

Looks in the Line: Photographic images of events, objects or activities showing the value of the new long-lived societies, in which five and six generations live together in the same temporary space and which are located in the cross-border territory¹ of Spain and Portugal.

Artistic Images: Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes, through the application of digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e. colouring, toning, collage, photo composites, HDR, etc.) that have new long-lived societies as their subject matter.

Drones/Aerials: Any photograph captured using an unmanned aerial vehicle, commonly known as a drone. Images taken from airplanes/helicopters with the theme of new long-lived societies are also accepted.

1. The Cross-border Area of Spain-Portugal is made up of 37 NUTS III belonging to both countries:

- Spain: Ourense, Pontevedra, Zamora, Salamanca, Cáceres, Badajoz, Huelva, A Coruña, Lugo, Ávila, León, Valladolid, Cádiz, Córdoba and Sevilla.

- Portugal: Alto Minho, Cávado, Terras Tras-os-Montes, Douro, Beiras e Serra de Estela, Beira Baixa, Alto Alentejo, Alentejo Central, Baixo Alentejo, Algarve, Ave, Alto Tâmega, Tâmega e Sousa, Área Metropolitana do Porto, Viseu Dão-Lafões, Região de Coimbra, Médio Tejo, Região de Aveiro, Região de Leiria, Oeste and Alentejo Litoral.

Do you accept non-digital photographs? 

Yes, we accept high quality scanned images from non-digital photographs. However, we do not accept printed copies of photographs. 

Can I participate if I live outside of Spain? 

Yes, but photographs must be uploaded before 24:00h (UTC+01:00- Brussels, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris) on 31 June 2024. 

Can I upload an old photo?

Photos taken before 1 December 2023 are not eligible. 

Will the negatives and slides requested be returned to the finalists?

All original negatives, slides and prints will be returned to the finalists. 

Do I need release forms for the people in my photo? 

If they are recognisable, and especially if they are children, you must download the authorization form and provide it to the Fundación General de la Universidad de Salamanca upon request. A model of the authorisation form is available here.

Similarly, participants whose photographs represent the work of others (such as sculptures, statues, paintings and other copyrighted works) must be prepared to obtain an authorization from the copyright holder and provide it to the Fundación General de la Universidad de Salamanca upon request. When photographing the work of others, it should be an object in its environment and not a complete close-up of someone else's creation. A model authorization is available here.

Can I enter a photograph if I no longer have the negative? 

If a photograph taken in a film does not have a slide or negative, you cannot enter the contest unless you have a high-resolution digital scan. 

Can photographs be cropped?

Trimmed photos are eligible in all categories. 

Can photographs be manipulated or enhanced?

We do not accept enhanced or digitally or otherwise modified photos, except those entered in the Artistic Images category. Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes through the application of digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e., colorization, toning, collage, composite photos, HDR, etc.) are eligible for the Artistic Images category. 

What does it mean when you say that photographs in five of its six categories cannot be "enhanced or altered"? 

Minor adjustments, including spotting, sharpness, contrast and slight color adjustment or digital equivalents, are acceptable for all categories. If our judges see that the photographer has obviously altered a photo, they have the right to disqualify it or move it to the Artistic Images category. 

By submitting a photo, you will have the opportunity to describe any adjustments made to the image. Please be as descriptive as possible. This information will allow the judges to decide whether your photograph is considered best in Altered Images or in one of the other categories. 

Do you accept black-and-white photographs? 

Yes. In addition, black-and-white color photographs are acceptable in all categories; however, make sure that any additional adjustments you make to the image comply with the rules regarding enhancing or modifying photographs.

Can I enter the same photo in multiple categories? 

Yes, you can enter a photo in up to three categories, selecting one as the main category. 

How large should my digital image be to upload the online registration form? 

In order to be displayed in our online gallery without being stretched or distorted, photographs must be submitted in .jpeg or .jpg format at 72ppp, edited for the web in sRGB color space of at least 2,000 pixels on its largest side and no heavier than 5 MB. Images from the photo contest are judged on computer screens, which have a maximum resolution of 72 dpi. 

Keep a high resolution version of your photos. You will need to have a higher resolution image at hand, a minimum of 300 dpi and 3,000 pixels on the longer side, to be considered in the final rounds of the contest. Mobile photographs are exempt from this size requirement, but must be submitted in their highest resolution. 

What if my digital photo does not have a resolution of 300 dpi, or more, at least 3,000 pixels on the long side? 

Without this requirement, the editors of the Fundación General de la Universidad de Salamanca cannot consider your photograph as a possible finalist or winner in our competition. Mobile photographs are exempt from this size requirement, but must be submitted in their highest resolution. 

Will you accept photos with watermarks? 

We will always show a credit next to your photo as it appears on the site. We do not accept photos with watermarks or descriptive text. 

Will the category change if you think I put my photo in the wrong one? 

Yes, if applicable, the judges of the Fundación General de la Universidad de Salamanca will change the category of your presentation. This will not affect your eligibility to win. 

Is it okay to submit a photograph that has been on my website? 

Yes, your photo is eligible for submission. 

I am 17 years old. Can I participate in the contest? 

We're sorry, but you must be 18 by June 31, 2024, the last day of submission, to qualify. 

What rights do I have to my photo? 

You retain your rights to your photograph; however, by participating in the contest, participants grant the Fundación General de la Universidad de Salamanca a perpetual, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the photographs, in whole or in part, in any medium currently existing or subsequently developed, for any educational, promotional, advertising, exhibition, archival, academic, and all other standards. Any photograph reproduced will include as much photographer credit as possible. The General Foundation of the University of Salamanca will not have to pay any additional fees or seek additional approval in connection with such uses.
