We have exceeded 2.000.000 users: cooperate to grow

Introduction

The increase in the number of people over 65 years of age and in longevity is now an inescapable reality and has become a determining factor in our society. According to European Commission forecasts, in just a few decades this segment of the population will represent 30% of the European population. This trend is even more pressing in Spain and Portugal, especially in their cross-border regions, where the number of elderly people is expected to far exceed the European average, making ageing a challenge for the present and future of these territories. The International Centre on Aging was created in response to this phenomenon. Its main mission is to consolidate itself as a centre of international excellence in terms of research and innovation in the area of ageing, leading, through cross-border collaboration, the development of knowledge and research in this field.

To this end, it has always sought cooperation to find answers that conceive ageing and longevity as the moment in life when what has already been learnt becomes real social capital, transferable to the community as a whole. It has promoted permanent dialogue between key actors and has encouraged, accelerated and implemented scientific research and discoveries, technological advances, behavioural practices and the renewal of social norms so that the life of older people not only means a healthy and rewarding existence for them but also for the society to which they belong.

The CENIE website is, therefore, the best showcase and loudspeaker for all the activities that take place throughout the year and that fall within the dynamics of the centre. The website is currently used to announce important face-to-face or online events such as Conversations in Salamanca or Meetings with Researchers (this last edition was held in webinar format).

But in addition to this, the CENIE website has different blogs, which serve to give a voice to different experts and bring research closer to the general public. Envejecer en Sociedad or Tecnología y Longevidad have regular publications and have managed to generate great interest among our readers and followers.

We cannot forget Open Dialgogue, currently in its second edition, a space to debate and vindicate the challenges but also the opportunities of the new longevity, with the participation of national and international experts at the forefront of their areas of research.

The photography competition is another of the "flagships" of this website, which each year attracts hundreds of new participants seeking recognition for their work. So far, and in the midst of its 4th edition, tparticipation numbers are most representative of the interest it arouses.

Now approaching its 5th anniversary, the International Centre on Ageing website has exceeded 2,000,000 users. Spain continues to be the country with the highest traffic, representing 17% of our visitors, closely followed by Brazil. Portugal closes the top 5.

The International Centre on Ageing and the Programme for a Long-lived Society projects are promoted by the Fundación General de la Universidad de Salamanca, Fundación General Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Direção-Geral da Saúde and Universidade do Algarve, in the framework of the INTERREG V-A Programme, Spain-Portugal, 2014-2020, (POCTEP), of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
