I Senior Consumer Barometer

Introduction

"Population ageing, a direct consequence of demographic change, has led to a widespread negative view of one of humanity's great achievements: increased life expectancy.

This improvement in longevity is accompanied, additionally, by a higher quality of life. It is therefore necessary to promote a positive view of the demographic challenge that values the capacity of individuals to maintain their social contribution regardless of their age".

These words of Antonio Huertas, President of Fundación Mapfre, serve to contextualise the creation by this entity of the Ageingnomics Research Centre, one of whose most important contributions is the creation of the I Barometer on the consumption of seniors in Spain.

This Barometer is intended to be updated periodically, which will make it possible to observe the evolution of senior consumption, as well as the emergence of new trends in the future, which are essential for the Longevity Economy to become a main driver of growth in Spain.

The International Centre on Ageing (CENIE), given the excellence of the work carried out, has established a line of collaboration with the Mapfre Foundation and its Ageingnomics Research Centre, in order to facilitate the dissemination and dissemination of the Senior Consumer Barometer. This research has been carried out under the direction of Juan Fernández Palacios and Iñaki Ortega and with the collaboration of the technical team made up of Manuel Sevillano, Jaime González, María Madrigal and Beatriz Laguna.

Prior to this Senior Consumer Barometer, the General Foundation of the University of Salamanca had prepared a Study on the Economics of Ageing, based on the concept that the age group of older people is a source of opportunities to stimulate business activity and economic development. And in order to take advantage of these opportunities, it is necessary to know the distinctive characteristics and behavioural habits of this population that have a direct impact on their economic impact.

For all these reasons, then and now, the fundamental objective is to provide an updated and statistically rigorous overview of this age segment within the Spanish population.
