Senior Consumer Barometer

The II Senior Consumer Barometer prepared in October 2021 - for the first time with the help of Google - provides insight into the habits of the more than 15 million Spaniards over the age of 55. The reality revealed in this study moves away from the negative clichés about this age cohort and helps to put an end to worrying ageism. Spanish seniors have more than one income at home (one in two), help their relatives (four out of ten) and have the capacity to save (one out of two). In terms of housing, they are homeowners (eight out of ten), do not want to move house (six out of ten) and are optimistic about the future (six out of ten) although they believe that their housing and energy costs will increase (six out of ten). At the same time, they take care of their health through their diet (seven out of ten), travel regularly (seven out of ten) and are in the minority of those who visit the doctor regularly (one in ten). Most are on the internet (six in ten), use e-commerce (four in ten) and are more informed than other age groups, especially on sustainability issues.

The International Centre on Ageing (CENIE) continues the publication of the Senior Consumer Barometer, given the excellence of the work carried out, and where very relevant and interesting information is offered to understand the socio-demographic change that is taking place in our society, and which will intensify in the coming years and decades.

CENIE identifies a strategic potential for our development in the Longevity Economy sector; therefore, it continues to deepen its collaboration with Fundación MAPFRE.

The Barometer carried out by the Ageingnomics Research Centre (Fundación MAPFRE), directed by Juan Fernández Palacios, was directed by Iñaki Ortega Cachón and Manuel Sevillano, and its technical team was made up of Jaime González, María Madrigal, Beatriz Laguna and Irene Sánchez.
